Internship in Agriculture Education

Interested in Agricultural Education? If so, TapRoots needs YOU!!!

TapRoots is an education program that places a specific emphasis on hands on learning to enhance middle school science curriculum. Since December 2010 TapRoots has invested time and resources to investigate techniques on how to interweave an agricultural educational with Maryland public schools. TapRoots officials have determined the appropriate pedagogy for Maryland schools and will be launching the revised curriculum in January 2012 at Greenbelt Middle School.

There are several objectives still to be met in order for the TapRoots program to be successful. TapRoots seeks to fulfill several internship positions for next year. Please read the details below. Tasks and Responsibilities:

  • Provide guest lectures on sustainability
  • Curriculum writing: This includes designing labs and writing scripts for lectures.
  • Interns will act as liaison between TapRoots and Greenbelt Middle School faculty
  • Garden Management
  • Assist in engineering a afterschool garden/edible science club
  • Community outreach

Qualifications:

  • Junior or Senior majoring in environmental science, ecology, agriculture, or plant sciences
  • Clear public speaking skills
  • Ability to think small and act big
  • Complete a criminal background check

Time Commitment:

  • 20 hours per week with flexible schedules
  • Internship assignment begins January 15th 2012 and is active until June 15th 2012 (TapRoots will offer opportunities for further job assignments for interns after June 15th)
  • Attend the Maryland Association for Environmental and Outdoor Education on February 11-12th to present information about TapRoots (http://www.maeoe.org/)

Benefits:
This is an unpaid internship. Interns will receive college credit for their involvement with the program. TapRoots will reimburse interns for out of pocket travel expenses associated with their assignment. Besides gaining practical experience in teaching as well as garden design and management, interns will be connected to a professional community of leaders in sustainability.
