Sliding Scale Policy
Pay what you can with our sliding scale!
A sliding scale means that there are several payment options for you to choose from, based on your understanding of your own financial need, and other forms of social privilege you may experience in the world.
As explained by Soul Fire Farm’s solidarity share model: “We ask that people with more wealth and income pay more for their CSA share subscription to subsidize shares for those with less wealth and income. We empower people to decide for themselves what contribution level makes sense and offer coaching to support that determination. For example, people are encouraged to pay less if they are supporting children, have high medical expenses or immigration costs, or receive public assistance. People are encouraged to pay more if they own their home, have inheritance, work less by choice, or have high earning power based on their demographic position…The goal is that all members pay approximately the same percentage of their income toward their food, practicing economic solidarity.”
Much has been written about sliding scales as tools for more meaningfully integrating principles of social and economic justice into farming and food access. If you’re interested in learning more, we recommend you check out these guides from Soul Fire Farm and Little Red Bird Botanicals.
The additional funds from our redistribution and sustainer shares are designed to offset the cost of accessible shares and allow us to gift free shares to our Edmonston neighbors.
Member Agreement
By purchasing a CSA share, you agree to the following statement: By becoming a member of ECO’s CSA/Farm Share program, I am committing to picking up my share for the time period of the season. If I cannot pick up my share I will try to have a friend pickup in my place. I understand that there are no make ups or refunds for shares not picked up. I have read and understood the policies outlined in the information provided.
Farm Share Policies
Share Pick Ups: All members pick up their share. Shares can only be picked up during the designated time, but you may send a friend to pick yours up if you cannot make it. There are no make-ups or refunds for shares not picked up.
Inclement Weather/Cancellations: Farm share pickups are held rain or shine. In the event of hazardous conditions, ECO will notify members of pickup cancellation or rescheduling via email and members will be issued a makeup option.
Crop Failure and Risk: ECO’s farmers and staff do their very best to provide consistent, high quality produce to every farm share member, every week. However, the farm share members also share in the risks as well as the benefits of the growing season. Risks in farming include pests, drought, excessive rain, wind, and crop failure. In case of shortage in supply ECO may need to change the variety and quantity of produce and/or will distribute available produce fairly among its members. Farmer designated skip weeks will be used in the case of extreme circumstances.
Payments: All farm share members must pre-pay for the season. (If looking for month-to-month payment accommodations or to pay using nutrition assistance benefits, reach out to engage@ecocityfarms.org.) Members commit to paying any balance by the due date. Checks should be made payable to ECO City Farms.
